This costume was designed, drafted and constructed with inspiration of the New Year’s Eve party in 1938 at the 50-50 Club in Kings Cross. The 50-50 club was Sydney’s best known illegal casino, sly-grog nightclub and cocaine den. The club was a hangout for high and low life, for patrons, singers, dancers, prostitutes and henchmen and women.
For my dress I wanted to focus on learning bias pattern piecing and joining, which is reflected in the patterning of the dress. The skirt is made up of 5 bias cut petals to create a handkerchief affect, with the bodice being made up of different triangle cut pieces to fit tightly against the models body.
In conjunction with this project, we worked with Rebecca Reed to create headwear pieces to compliment the gowns. Mine has a base of a sunray crown made of metal rods with a halo attached which I have embellished with foam stars and moons and gems.
Materials: Silk.
